Dinner and poker inside Redcliff Row's 1930s picture theatre

You will find four tables inside Redcliff Row, set under the marquee of the old picture theatre where the last film stopped running years ago. You sit where the stalls once were, felt instead of fold-down seats, and you deal with a house dealer instead of an usher. Nothing you play here happens online — every hand is dealt in person, there is no wagering at any table, and no poker machine has ever stood on this floor. Chips buy you points and nothing else. Doors open at six on a weeknight, and you can stay until half past midnight, a short walk back from the water.

The room

Four tables, one dealer, no exceptions.

Four tables are what you will find when you step inside Redcliff Row, set on the raked floor of a building that spent decades as Yeppoon's picture theatre before the last reel stopped running and the stalls made way for felt.

You will not find anything of this online, and you will not find a single poker machine on the premises; you take a seat, the house dealer takes it from there, and your chips buy you points, never cash.

Our kitchen

What the kitchen's serving tonight

The kitchen at Redcliff Row runs independently of the poker tables — a short menu, cooked fresh each evening.

For dinner: seafood chowder, then a fish pie with mash.

For dessert, sticky date pudding. A dinner-only table is a separate booking.

Before you visit

Five questions you will probably ask.

How do I get to James Street?

You will find it a short block back from the foreshore, an easy walk from most of central Yeppoon.

Where do I park?

You can use the street out front or the larger car park just around the corner.

How do I pay once I'm inside?

You don't — there is no wagering and no cash prize; chips are supplied at the table and used for points only.

What age do I need to be?

You need to be eighteen or over, and you will be asked for identification at the door.

Do I need to book a table in advance?

You don't, most nights, though a call ahead helps if you want a guaranteed seat on a Friday.

The etiquette

Eight short rules before you sit.

  1. You take whichever seat is free — tables aren't held, so arrive early on Fridays.
  2. You need to be eighteen or over, identification checked at the door as a matter of course.
  3. You use chips to keep score only; they are handed back at the end of the night, worth nothing beyond that.
  4. You accept the house dealer's ruling on any dispute at the table, without argument.
  5. You act in turn and take longer phone calls out to the footpath, so the table can hear the dealer.
  6. You keep the pace steady — a slow hand is fine, holding up the whole table repeatedly isn't.
  7. You can be asked to sit out the rest of the night if you're not playing fair with the table.
  8. You leave quietly once the last hand's done; the marquee stays lit until the room's empty.
Inside the theatre

One raked floor, and poker at all four tables.

You will notice the floor first — it still rises toward the back, a leftover from the days when it helped an audience see the screen, and the back row of tables now sits a little higher than the front because of it.

You will find one house dealer covering all four tables, dealing Texas Hold'em at one and Omaha at another, keeping every points tally straight as the night goes on.
